300 Wby Mag

Anybody loading any IMR4831 IN YOUR 300 ? I'am shooting a 24"barrel.I know i'am giving up alot of fps with the short barrel.Loading 180gr round nose.If you are useing 4831 hows it working for you ? My one book says max is 81.8 gr then another book is saying max at 76 gr. I know that i have to work up to max. thinking of starting around 74gr that would put me at about2900 fps.

Re: 300 Wby Mag

I would be VERY leary of 81.8 gr of IMR-4831 under a 180 !!! Sounds AWFULLY hot.

I might even suggest backing your start point back to 72.0 gr and work up from there.

My pet powder for 180's in the .300 Bee is IMR-7828

Re: 300 Wby Mag

I have gotten excellent results with IMR 4831 with 150gr, 165gr, and 180gr bullets in the .300WBY.
My favorite 180gr load uses 80.0gr and that shows no signs of pressure at all.
I do not have a Weatherby rifle with freebore, I have a Win. Mod. 70 in the WBY chambering.
Your rifle will decide what it likes and how much powder it can safely handle.

Re: 300 Wby Mag

They are probably talking about 81 grains of H-4831. I have been loading 81 grains of H-4831 behind a 180 grain bullet forever.

If you have older manuals you will find it is an acceptable load.

Re: 300 Wby Mag

BTW I doubt you are giving up much with a 24" barrel. I have not clocked mine in many years but if I remember correctly my 24" barrel was within a 100 fps of the book numbers which are always exaggerated.
