Finish on older Savage 99

Just picked up a nice 1957 vintage Savage 99E in .308 Win. Has a birch stock with the "figure" Garand collectors dream of on their IHC made M1's, but it is chipped in a few places. Can anyone tell me what the original glossy finish is so I can properly remove it so I can give this 99 a little "facelift"? I'll probably restain the wood in the reddish walnut color of pre-war Winchester Mod 70's. Not sure if it'll get a hand applied Tru Oil or tung oil finish. Thanks in advance.

I'm far from an expert on this, but I remember my dad putting linseed oil on the stock of his 99.
