Federal Fusion Ammo

I have a Remington 700 in 7mm mag that I have always run Remington Core Lok ammo through until last year. I bought a box of Federal Fusion on a tip from a friend. For a factory load they group extremely well but I am interested to know if anyone has had experience with them on deer (especially mule deer - they are slightly tougher). I shot an antelope last year with one at 150 yards and dropped it in its tracks, but I went right through the heart. When I took it apart it it didn't look like much damage and the exit wound was as clean as the entry so I am concerned about expansion. Would love to hear comments good and bad.

Re: Federal Fusion Ammo

I shot 3 deer this year with Fusion ammo from my 338 Federal. Worked very well. Shot placement on one was marginal but did a lot of damage. Dead in about 40 yards after down hill dash.

Re: Federal Fusion Ammo

I tried the factory 30.06 federal fusions on deer and noticed the same thing. They grouped well on the range but seemed to lack the expansion after the hit. For a factory load Remington Core loc is pretty good. I use the cheap Winchester XX 180 grain gray box 300 win mag for elk because that's what the rifle likes.

I'm so far behind I think I'm in first place.

Re: Federal Fusion Ammo

I like them. A few deer with a .308 is my only game experience, but they all dropped. I have perhaps 10 or a dozen mule deer killed, in my experience they are not tough at all, and not near as smart as a white tail. My custom 760 .308 groups the fusions MOA, can't ask for much more for economical ammo.

I shot it in my 338 Federal. It shot tight. I have never used it on game but some guys on another forum I watch speak highly of it's performance on game.

Re: Federal Fusion Ammo

I have taken a few deer with them in 7mm-08 and 7mm Mag and have let others use my rifles to take quite a few deer with the same loads and not a single one of them (something like 11 or 12 deer), needed more than one shot and evry bullet performed well, expanding nicely and getting deep to complete penetration. Two that come to mind were almost full body length shots, one hitting the front shoulder almost at the brisket and lodging in the off side hip and another striking just in front of the right ham and found under the skin on the opposite front side, after breaking the shoulder socket. They work.

Re: Federal Fusion Ammo

Thanks guys for sharing your thoughts and experiences. The reason I brought this up was that I had a personal conversation with someone who absolutely bashed the Federals. Claims to have lost deer with them (I believe it was the person behind the trigger). I think I'll be taking them with me to Montana this fall.

Joe, I can't argue that muleys are dumb as a box of rocks. I have taken three and two out of three dropped on the first shot but the one in my picture took two fatal shots and a third before expiring far from where I shot him.

Re: Federal Fusion Ammo

Never used the fusion on deer but did take 2 caribou, one @ 287 yards and one @ 312 yards. Both dropped right there. This was from a 300 WSM, 165 grain. I always do a mini autopsy when field dressing the animal, both were chest shots and there was plenty of evidence of expansion with complete pass through performance.

Re: Federal Fusion Ammo

I think it's some of the best factory ammo out there.
Their BC is higher than most and it shoots extremely well in both my 700's.

Re: Federal Fusion Ammo

Yep ! You gotta love a deer that will stop 95 % of the time, turn around broadside, and look back at you while you take the shot !
