Rookie AR Question...

I just picked up an AR on trade yesterday and have a basic (probably stupid) ammo question. It is marked for 5.56mm. My question is are 5.56mm & .223 one in the same? Or do I need to use only 5.56mm ammo?

Re: Rookie AR Question...

I believe you can shoot 223 ammunition out of a rifle chambered for 5.56 mm, but not vice versa.

Re: Rookie AR Question...

While there are some minor differences in chamber/cartridge dimensions, my AR15 (Bushmaster CMP) and my Ruger Mini 14, will both digest 5.56 milsurp and commericial 223, without any problems.

I've shot several kinds of 5.56 in the Ruger for years. It also likes bulk pack Ultramax 223 ammo, which is all reloaded in military Lake City brass. So is Black Hills ammo, if not mistaken?

I would contact the manufacturer of that AR, to see what they say.

Re: Rookie AR Question...

Not to hijack this thread but does "I believe you can shoot 223 ammunition out of a rifle chambered for 5.56 mm, but not vice versa." That same satement apply to the 7.62 NATO vs 308?

The problem is that I don't know what I don't know.

Re: Rookie AR Question...

other way around with the 308/7.62 Nato. Commercial 308 is rated to a higher pressure than Military 7.62x51. So you can shoot 7.62x51 Nato in a 308 Winchester chamber, but you should not shoot commerical 308 Winchester in a rifle chambered for 7.62x51 Nato.

I have shot literally thousands of rounds of 5.56 out of a 223 chambered gun, with zero problems.
