Latest build and 458 socom question

Just finished my latest build. Took her out and ran 100 rounds through it without any issues. Here she is. AeroPrecision lower, DPMS lower parts kit, Delton upper, Vortex strikefire red/green dot. I have a cheap flip up rear sight on it now and plan on getting a different one but it co-witnesses the dot well.

I have another lower sitting here and can't decide on a caliber. I want something bigger but the 6.8spc and 6.5 grendel don't excite me. Does anyone own or has anyone shot a 458 SOCOM. This caliber looks a little more interesting

Re: Latest build and 458 socom question

I think you may be a little surprised with the 6.5 grendel..it's a sweet little cartridge more than capable of the best accuracy of all you mentioned for sure..Also, the expense of shooting those .458 slugs may not seem like much in the beginning but I assure you will become prohibitive in a short while.. That big ole slug has a purpose but since we can't use them here what would be the use..plus the recoil is alot more than the others... watched a guy shoot the remington model 15 I believe..looked like fun but after 20 rounds it looked to me like it took it's toll on the shoulder.. You might want to look at the standard 7mm/08 and 308..they would give you alot more yardage because of the bullet shape and BC that the socom...

Re: Latest build and 458 socom question

I was thinking the 458 may be fun to take down south pig hunting this spring. I wouldn't mind a 308 but the 458 fits an AR15 lower and uses standard 5.56/223 magazines

glock3540, if you don't mind me asking. On average whats it cost to throw one of those bad boys together?

The problem is that I don't know what I don't know.

Re: Latest build and 458 socom question

Here's the breakdown from what I can remember

-Aero lower $74 from dansammo in Apollo ($60 + tax and check)
-DPMS lower parts kit $60
-Rear stock, tube, buffer, spring $50
-Delton upper $385 - found a pretty good deal on this
-Flip up rear $30(going to be replaced with something better)
-Vortex dot was about $100 after coupons/gift cards
-The quad rail came from Sportsman's guide and was $40 (not top quality but seems OK so far)
-Streamlight Polytac flashlight was around $50
-Low 1" scope mount for light (had lying around)
-MagPul foregrip $23

I have approximately $812 total in this one. Would be a lot cheaper without light, dot sight, rail, etc.

Re: Latest build and 458 socom question

458 SOCOM is a lot of fun. I have an RRA upper. You have a large range of loads to choose from. Everything from 300 to 500+ gr. I like shooting the 500 gr subsonics. My next project is a 458 in bolt action and a 458 subsonic can. The 458 is pretty much a handloader proposition, however.
