Goose Banding

The PGC did all the goose banding back in June and here are the results. It is interesting to see all the Recaptures and how old some of these geese are.

"A total of 446 geese banded in previous years were recaptured during banding operations. Of the recaptures, 98% were originally banded in Pennsylvania under Pennsylvania Game Commission Permit #06778 (Table 1). In addition, 8 geese were recaptured that were originally banded outside of Pennsylvania and are considered a foreign recapture. Foreign recaptures are birds that were previously banded under another permit and recaptured during our banding operations. Of these 8, 3 were originally banded in New York, 2 were originally banded in Ontario, 2 from New Jersey and 1 was originally banded in Maryland. We also recaptured 3 geese that were originally banded in 2003 as AHY birds making them at least 16 years old. One bird was recaptured at Dubois Reservoir, one at Middle Creek WMA, and one at Beltzville Lake. In addition, we also captured one goose at Duck Harbor Pond that was originally banded in 2005 as a local F. This goose would be 13 years old. We also recaptured 6 additional geese (4-Female, 2-Male) that were originally banded in 2006 as AHY that would be at least 13 years old. Five of the geese were recaptured at Beltzville Lake and one at Rest Land Cemetery. All 10 of these birds were recaptured in the same 10 minute block as they were originally banded."

I've spent most of my money on Waterfowling, Women and Whiskey.
The rest of my money I just wasted.

Thats impressive how some of those birds can make it all those years with out ending up in a bag limit.

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Very good info.
I know I love the whole banding process.
And it makes an already interesting hobby even more interesting when you are lucky enough to harvest one with a band.
