12/20 report

Nice cold morning this morning but unfortunately was my least productive condition a clear sky. Hunted a spot I normally go to on the Delaware where you're guaranteed action but not necessarily birds. Right at shooting light I was covered in ducks had a pair land a little out range and worked some more but they didn't finish which is typical. Most of my success is from 730-930 mostly singles to triples but normally always work or come right into the spread. Right around 8am heard quacks to my right and had birds flying in front of me. Out of no where about five feet off the river bank and 15 yards from me this bird comes whistling in from my right. Saw the brown/reddish head and heard it whistle so I knew it was going to be a nice surprise to the frequent mallard I shoot. 1 shot crushed the bird and mallards I was working flew away. Retrieved my bird to find out it was a GWT drake. I was super surprised this late in the year to have one come in. I'm 90% confident I saw him fly past first light alone since I noted a smaller duck flying mach 5 by itself. Unfortunately its been a rough duck season not taking shots when I should of or birds just not giving the spread a look but shooting that drake big time boosted my spirits. Ended with two mallards, 1 goose, and the GWT. GWT was fully plumed so its going on the wall.
Dogface and BRDOGS like this.

nf, first thanks for the report but I have a question regarding water fowling on the Bid D. I field hunt waterfowl exclusively due to no boat and I'm looking to purchase a sit on top kayak. Is it feasible to hunt from a kayak on the big D or any waterway for that matter? I know cold weather/water protection is the number one priority.
Thanks for your time

keepin' it reel...

I mean I hunt from the bank without a boat. I only use a boat when hunting South Jersey. Luckily where I hunt is shallower but getting a goose a week and a half ago I got a little wet as the river was way up and flooded my waders a bit. I wouldn't see why a kayak wouldn't work.

Teal is by far my favorite duck to eat but I couldn't bring myself to do it with this guy.
