Re: Anybody catching fox in haysets?

If you are having trouble with deer eating your hay at haysets, try using manure from the barn. Set your traps as normal, usually 2, but you can use 3 or 4 if you wish. Sprinkle a bushel measure full of the smelly stuff over and around your traps. It matters not if bits and pieces of the trap show through. The fox or coyote don't know what a trap is anyway. Manure is a natural odor and certainly more powerful than just hay. When using manure, add no urine or lure. There's enough urine in the straw to make the set attractive. Also, when using manure you do not need to use a 'clean' trap, that is dyed and/or waxed. What ever you find laying about home will work.

Consider this a belated Christmas gift.

I trap mink because I don't know any better

Re: Anybody catching fox in haysets?

I caught three reds in a similar set this year. Farmer spread manure on hay fields and fox were checking out clumps of manure. Those two sets caught 3 reds and two skunks in about 15 days!!!!

16-17 numbers
fox 0
coons 8
coyotes 1
mink 0
muskrat 0
beaver 0
opossum 1
skunk 1

Moss it's because you are not carrying around buckets of manure. Go get ya some fresh manure and make up some manure hay sets.

He also forgot to mention above that gloves are not needed when making this set either. Go ahead and spread the manure and set your traps barehanded I have t had any dig ups yet

Me neither! But I do add urine- especially if I have been drinking heavily!

Re: Anybody catching fox in haysets?

There is a guy that traps near me that uses dried cow manure to bed his traps in from day one. Usually doesn't do too bad on reds.....
