58lb beaver from lastnight's check while calling

We decided to check some traps lastnight while we were out cat/fox calling. We stopped in at our lone beaver set (where I managed to catch a coon the other night) and had this big ole 58 pounder in the 330. I have no idea how or why he managed to get that far through the 330, as he clearly did not fit, but he did. This is the 2nd beaver we caught near this cove. One at the far opposite end, and one here. Both more than 500yds from the hut in the cove. 2 weeks ago on the bobcat hunting opener we called down here and saw where a big beaver had just crossed the farm road into the stream and went down to the river. We set a 330 in the stream figuring we would nail him when he came back that night. Well...... 2 weeks later he finally decided to come back. lol. Must have been moving to get that far in!!

Re: 58lb beaver from lastnight's check while calling

I can't remember who, but someone on here a few weeks ago said they would like to see some pictures of these beaver around 60lbs, because they couldn't imagine them that big. I am 6', 225 just for size reference. The one we caught at the other end of this cove was 54lbs. Just shows that if you get way out from the huts, you might have to wait 3 weeks to get the big ones, but you can avoid the little ones. Not that it should matter if they are destroying corn and woods like these ones.

Cool! But I think he backed into that 330 LOL

Re: 58lb beaver from lastnight's check while calling

That makes almost as much sense as him trying to fit through it. lol. I caught a big boar coon in it the other night, and nailed him right behind the ears. This big boy must have been moving to get that far through. I had triggers in a bell shape to avoid otter catches, but they had to have still hit his head or neck. I even had it on the last notch.

Impressive. How far did you have to carry that big 'un out? I was at the local fur buyers recently, he has a big beaver contest every year, win a #15 Duke. The guy that won that contest last year (with a 72 pounder) brought in a 61 lb from opening day.
