Is it Possible to Only Target and Catch Yotes?

Is it possible to set to trap (using either foot hold or CRs) coyotes ONLY and avoid catching anything else? Or is it impossible to avoid incidental catches, such as coon. I don't know if there is a way to just attempt to catch a coyote, as I'm interested in doing so. Can it be done?

Re: Is it Possible to Only Target and Catch Yotes?

Short answer...no....

Traps are traps....they will catch a lot of different critters...I caught a coon in a CR set for fox...I think it was 8" off the ground...perfect neck hold on it..

Coon..possum..skunk...fox..cats..fishers..etc etc will all work the same sets...

IMO your best bet may be CRs...but even then you still won't get 100% coyotes..

Thank you for the reply. Was thinking the same thing - a CR placed at a certain height might be the best bet, if you can't avoid an incidental capture with a foot hold. Mainly interested in catching a coyote. Maybe I will look to take the CR class.

The only things you could do to really limit your incidentals is:

1. On footholds, crank up your pan tension to 5+ lbs. (likely higher)
2. Set CRs at the maximum of 12" off the ground.

Nothing is full proof, but that would certainly keep the majority of your incidentals out.

I have a question. If one were to do this with footholds. What would an appropriate pan tension be?

I just had to release a turkey the other morning from a blind set for coyote. I was so excited to see something in the corner of the field until it tried to fly away 😕

Well that should take care of most of the fox. You don't get coons?

I'm curious as to what tension a guy doing coyote adc work would run in the summer....
