Sewing up holes in hides?

Whats the best way to sew up a hole in a hide. I have a coyote hide in the freezer from gun season that was dispatched with a .308 bouncing through the mountain laurel. I was thinking about fleshing the hide then use black thread to repair the hole before it goes on the stretcher.

Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

Flesh it carefully then sew with dental floss while pelt is onside out. Make sure needle goes through as close to open edge of pelt as possible. Then stretch.

Been told to cut the hole in a oval shape, then pinch it shut to sew. Looks more natural

If there are no pieces of hide missing. (You will be able to tell after fleshing) sew along the hole don't remove anything. I use curved medical needles and heavy brown thread that looks like carhart material. Color isn't important. Dental floss, as Gill said and a regular sewing needle will get the job done. Keep your stitches close.
If you have a small bald spot in a hide you want to remove that's when you want to cut the oval hole.
