did that just happen?

Checking traps this morning and I get to one field that is about 400 acres. I have 2 double sets in the field that are close together. I get to a point close by where I can tell there is nothing in them. Then, about 30 yards from one set and 60 yards from me, I see a red laying in the middle of the field with no cover. I am dumbfounded as to why he is laying there and running all options through my head. I realize he is just laying there so I grab the .22 revolver and step out and shoot. I hit him at 62 yards. He jumps up and runs. The field is 900 yards across to the words line and he makes it. I see where he goes in the woods so I drive over. I can't find the spot. I'm ready to leave and see tracks go into a piece of 8" pipe about 20 ft. Long that is laying there. I look in and there he is at the other end. I shoot and he crawls out and is done.

I've seen them lay by while their mate is hooked in a trap but no obvious reason why he was bedded there and didn't run when I pulled up.

Re: did that just happen?

I haven't caught a rubbed one yet. Majority of catches are always juveniles which don't have a den yet which explains why this one is sleeping in a field. Even my adults have looked great.

I seen today where I could hang some cables and get a couple but didn`t because I figured they would be looking bad by now.I only have a couple sets out where the coyotes made urine post right now and a couple weasel sets.

Re: did that just happen?

ten years ago, a red sat quietly next to my horses at the water trough one Sunday morning. He sat there even as I walked to the barn and carried hay to the gate, about 40 feet away. Then it up and ran off. I saw that red almost weekly for over a year. More often in the evenings just sitting on the hill behind the barn, sometimes it sat at the edge of the woods 50 ft from the kitchen window. Heard it was shot raiding the neighbor's hen house. the first day I thought it was sick, but after a few weeks I realized it just wasn't afraid.

Good job Gill. Get as many as you can whether in a trap or not!

Re: did that just happen?

Good one!! I have only had one fox that was rubbed this year, and it was just a tiny spot just infront of the base of it's tail. I have never gotten a rubbed grey. Just one with mange once.

Re: did that just happen?

I guess I have had a few rubbed red but due to ticks this year. Rubbed on the shoulder/neck area from rubbing trees due to being itchy. I've got a few red with hundreds of ticks around the necks.
