cold weather call lure?

Iíve had hay sets out the last two nights and while there are fresh fox tracks within 20 yards nothing has come to inspect the set. I was reading that in extreme cold temperatures the urine and gland lure doesnít give strong odor because it freezes up. Iíve read it could pay off to put a strong smelling scent on or near the set to catch the attention of something in the area. I have quick access to either Kishels K9 bait (gel looking stuff) or Rickards skunk essence. I figured the K9 bait would go under the hay and/or the skunk essence would be applied nearby. I also have some freshly skinned rabbit hides from a successful hunt last weekend. What about putting a hide/head under the hay? I would appreciate any advice on getting them to check the set. Thanks!

I had the same experience. Fox and yotes going right by, guess they couldn't smell it. Going to try some hay sets tonight.

I usually put Caven's gusto in the surrounding area as a call lure. It is straight up skunk. Like smell it 100yds upwind skunk. In this cold, I might even try putting at the set instead of near it.

Leave it alone.

Most of the appeal of a hay set is visual. The hay itself is the attractant. Frequent visits to any set will put canines on guard.

Carmens Canine Call, Night Owl Crossbones, Morgans Swampdog. Pure skunk quill. Eye appeal is important as well. It may be very possible they already know the set is there and are just not intrested enough yet. When this happens on my line often another set is made to spark intrest. It is often the one that catches first.

I would think if the tracks are 20 yards away the fox saw the set. No need to smell anything to come and check out the hay.
