Will haysets work without snow?

I have been reading about haysets, and how well they work for some of you. How do they work without snow? My buddy called me thismorning, he has some land he purchased last year and wanted to stick some traps out just to maybe see what happens.

With the weather being crazy down here, thawing, freezing, rain, i figured these haysets would be the way to go. I went over and made two haysets and one dirthole, one of the haysets was made wih jus one trap, the other used 2 traps. All sets were made at intersections where atleast 4 roads intersect at field edges, this property has not been trapped or called since the late 90s.

Is anyone useing haysets with no snow on the ground? How are they working for you?

Be nice..

I would imagine that they would if that's the set you want to go with.

Ok I'll be honest. I had to see what the hype was about with hay sets a few years ago. Everyone I set (wasnt many) never caught a fox and I repeatedly had to keep resetting the traps because deer would fire them every night. Just didn't work out for me.

I did the same thing.. I did manage to catch one fox and that was it. I don't wast the time with them any more, dirt holes produce alot better...

Use straw and that won't be a problem.

Re: Will haysets work without snow?

I once caught 60 foxes in hay sets in one season, but there were foxes all over the danged place that year too. However they do work, and are useful when the weather is changing it's mind every other day- snow or no snow. Yes you can straw chaff instead if deer are being a problem. The set is basically a simple scent post set.

Flat/post/blind/walk through sets right near dirtholes have been killing it for me lately. Seems they aren't working the hole that great but go walk past that object and get caught.

Re: Will haysets work without snow?

Like FTW, 3 years ago I took 30 with the hay set. This year only 5 but I didn't have many hay sets out. When the weather is bad and dirt holes fill up with water, I would convert them to hay sets.
