Debating over stretchers

This wil be my first year skinning my fur and therefore my first year sending them to nafa. Ive read tons and tons of articles on what stretchers to buy to get the most money in the nafa auction but there's really never a solid answer because everything varies by the state. So now I have to ask my fellow Pennsylvanians, Should I use the nafa sizes for solid boards that seem to be too big for PA furs, or board sizes that seem to fit the animals from around here better, or should I just get adjustables? I know everyone has their own opinion but my main goal is to get the most money out of the auction.

2013/14 Goals:
Reds 0/8
Greys 0/1
Coon 0/10
Mink 0/3
Muskrat 0/5
Coyote 0/1
Beaver 0/2
Bobcat 0/1

Re: Debating over stretchers

Most animals it's your measurement in length that decides the size category your fur goes in. More than the type of board it goes on the natural size of the animal will determine that. Most importantly do a good job putting it up without holes, and try and catch prime fur and you will get the best price.

I use wood stretchers. It's a personal preference.

Re: Debating over stretchers

Any fur buyer will take a pelt if it's wood or wire. Wood stretchers will cost more but make a nicer finished product. Mink have to be put up wood but you can do wire for everything else. I used to use wire but since have reverted to all wood except coyote which I plan on switching this year.

The horizon is your starting point.

I use wood, made to NAFA specs, to get a uniform finish.
I like the same look and so does NAFA
...that's my opinion from observation and experience.

Re: Debating over stretchers

Skinner states-
Most animals it's your measurement in length that decides the size category your fur goes in. More than the type of board it goes on the natural size of the animal will determine that.
Natural size must be place on correct size board or wire stretcher. If stretcher is too wide or narrow, even the best fur will be down graded. Period. Also, if'n the hide is pulled (stretched) too long, too thin, fur will be down graded.
Hence: using the correct board size is the final part of putting up fur

Re: Debating over stretchers

Wow I'm even more confused after reading this thread lol. I think I'm just not gonna trap this year so I don't have to worry about what stretchers to use

Re: Debating over stretchers

If you say what animals you plan on trapping...other PA guys can tell you what works for them.

Re: Debating over stretchers

For coyotes I like the 9" NAFA board.
