advise for putting up fur

I would like to try and put up my own fur this year. Im mostly targeting fox and coon. Was just wondering what kinds of boards, tools, tricks you guys use. I know it takes a lot of practice to get good at putting up fur, figured I need to learn sooner rather than later.

A dozen coon boards of mixed sizes. 7" and 7 1/2". A mixed dozen of fox boards of various sizes. Just targeting coon and fox a 6" beam would work fine for you. You'll need some push pins to pin the fur to the stretchers. A tail stripper and a descent fleshing knife. A good apron is a must. Will you be drying your fur in a heated room? A fan for air circulation is needed. A couple fur hangers or just run wire through the noses. Maybe someone else will chime in with what I'm missing.

Try to find someone to show the ropes first hand. Videos can help but hands on where you can ask questions is better. Practice on the possums you catch if you can put them up well you will do fine on everything else.

I would love to get some hands on help. I just really dont know anyone in the area that traps, let alone get some hands on experience. I will definitely be buying some DVD's though.

Re: advise for putting up fur

It's a little drive from your place to mine but you're welcome to stop by and watch/learn this fall if interested. PM if you'd like. I put all my fur up on boards. Craig Todaro makes some nice boards by the way.

Re: advise for putting up fur

I'll help you!I have family down there where you are,and use to trap that area hard.if you can freeze your stuff, i'll make a trip and help walk you thru skinning/fleshing/boarding.If you can skin, all the better,as you won't need as much freezer space.Buy some boards from Craig,as mentioned. You have tons of reds down there and they are super easy to put up.The coons take a little more work. You'll also need a decent fleshing knife, and skinning knifes.I have all that but you should have your own.Its alot easier then it looks to put up fur,and hands on is wayyyyy better then a video. If you have no freezer space then you could run up here to my place which is 45 minutes from you
