beaver relocation

this past february i was contacted about possibly live trapping a few beaver to be relocated to a gamelands in a neighboring county and figured it would be fun . well the weather was definately not on my side .people were still ice fishing at several of the local lakes around here right up untill the end of march .
my son and i were able to find a little open water the last week of season and set three snares . on the first check we connected with a juvenile from the previous year . well , we weren't at all prepared to get this beaver out of the woods . it was about a 25-30 lber and i didn't bring a snare poll , all we had was a 25 gallon steel garbage pale . neither of us were sure it would fit in , and i'm fairly sure the beaver wasn't happy about us trying to get him in . however after a few tries we were able to get him in with the lid on , all we had to do was figure out how to secure the lid . so we took our belts off and tied them together ,which worked temporarily . we were able to get him the 1/2 mile or so out to the truck and called the lmo that i was helping out . we set up a meeting place and tyrned the beaver over to him . well , for the last few months i have been wondering how this relocation worked out . today , on my way home from work i received a call from the officer .seems the place he took this beaver was to swamp in carbon county on sgl that at one time had beavers ,however their has not been any around fro about ten years .the food was abound ,the water was there ,just no beaver .well i am happy to reprt that this beaver has set up residence ,apparently he has rebuilt the dam and lodge and has some flooding of the woods going on .now ,what was recently just a stream with hardly any life ,is now full of frogs , ducks ,geese ,and all other kinds of aquatic life . amazing what a beaver can do for the environment . hopefully it turns into a breeding pair . with beavers being one of the most social mammals i was worried if a lone one would stay . very happy that i ,along with my son ,was able to help the GC out with helping my fellow sportsman

Next Winter's Project:

Relocate some of your upstate Bobcats to my neck of the woods. I'll even help you stuff them in a 5 gallon bucket.
