saw on another site, didnt know if legal for PA

I saw a guy posted pic on another site. He had foothold traps, that he welded a nail to the outside of he jaw, of course cut the point and head off. He said it would prevent critters from chewing their leg. I also thought maybe with older traps, it would also keep the jaws in line more.

So is it legal to weld a nail to the outside of the jaw of the trap? Please no --, just would like to hear from experienced trappers or a WCO that knows his trapping.

As long as it does not make the jaw spread at the dog more than 6 1/2 " or is in the form of teeth it is OK.

sounds like your talking about laminating. It does give more surface area. The down side is the springs need to be strong enough to push the extra surface thru the dirt.

Yeah it sounds like he made jaw laminations from the nail.

Yes I'm refering to chew guards. Not lamination. Chew guards legal in PA?

Yes, they are legal.
You don't see them too often any more.
As a kid a had a few #1 Diamond longsprings with the double jaw.
I used them on skunks as that specie is notorious for chewing.
They did save me black & white woods kitties.

I trap mink because I don't know any better

Alright thanks guys. I work at a lumber yard, so I can get a hold of nails to cut up and weld. No just need to figure how to make my own stretcher boards out of 1x6 and 1x8 pine boards
