Beaver Population Experience

I'm sure someone can tell me about how many Beaver to take from one area. I am a first year beaver trapper and have been very successful trapping a couple small rivers. I don't want to take out the population as most wouldn't even believe they exist in the areas I am trapping. What have been your experiences in trapping in the same areas year after year? If I take 4-5 from one stretch of small river will I be wiping them out?

Re: Beaver Population Experience

If the small river your trapping is coming out or going into larger bodies of water they'll most likely be beavers there year after year

Re: Beaver Population Experience

All depends on the location.

If it's a beaver swamp / pond, you have to have fresh sign otherwise don't bother.

If it's a river or stream, fresh sign is important, but you can also catch traveling or dispersing beavers looking for a place to set up a new home. Might not be any fresh sign around at all. My dad usually gets a few this way back home when there's not sign to speak of but we know they travel the waterway.

Re: Beaver Population Experience

If you are catching enough beavers to think you are hurting them...you are probably hurting them. Remember, you are not the only beaver trapper in PA.

Re: Beaver Population Experience

And unless you're talking about a massive swamp or one that is fed by large stream or river, there is a finite amount of beavers in there. Plus, depending on the situation (landowner) perhaps the goal IS to eradicate them from the area.

Re: Beaver Population Experience

That depends on the sign your seeing and the size of the beaver your catching. If your catching little ones then theres a family group;at least one.If you only caught a big one or two, that may be all there is
Not much of a beaver trapper, but set a little for them. They can get smart quick so its doubtful you'll clean them out unless you gang set hard from the get go.I don't have alot of beaver in my area so I only go for 1-2 per spot then pull, unless I know theres a bunch around
