nontrapper ?

I thought traps had to be labeled with a name and address?
My dog got one this morn. She's fine but I was hoping to tell the guy to be careful as the property owner let's lots of people walk their dogs in his fields. If they start complaining he might lose access. This guy shutdown hunting and trapping 10 yrs ago due to a hunter argument.

Re: nontrapper ?

Glad your dog is OK and you knew how to release him.

Like LF stated, ID number or name and address. They went to the optional ID to avoid retaliation and confrontation. If you NEED to know the owner then the PGC is brought into the middle. The extreme anti groups on their sites will publicly publish names, addresses, work addresses, and photos of individual trappers if they can get them. So the ID number provides legal anonymity.

If there are no labels at all I would report it. He is probably trespassing and doesn't want to be identified.

Re: nontrapper ?

Or a trapper I.d.number from the PGC, on a durable tag attached to the trap.

Hopefully the person that placed the trap has permission. If so, could possible be the tag was torn off from a catch.
So in my opinion, he has the right to be there and is in no wrong, other than not replacing a tag. The people walking the dogs should take the time to talk to the landowner about any possible hazzards before walking there dog.
If the dog started sniffin hard at something peculiar it should be able to be pulled back from it by it's leash before something could happen.

Re: nontrapper ?

Thanks for the info. I doubt he's trespassing.
As far as the dog walking he's let them for yrs, but hadn't allowed trapping in at least 10.
This is a very residential neighborhood. The trapper is in the right I just would like to avoid any confrontation with other folks that won't understand.

Re: nontrapper ?

You might not have seen it some people weld and scratch there info so people who try to steal the trap cant remove it. If he is doing everything by the law. There is nothing to worry about just dont walk your dog around those areas.

Well IMO if the area is open to trapping and it is actively being trapped then I wouldn't take the dog there. The odds are good the dog won't be damaged if caught again but there are no guarantees. Still would concern me that the trap was not marked.

And you're right if it is very residential and others are walking their dogs they will get caught too. Do you know what size trap it was?

Re: nontrapper ?

Trust me, I won't walk the dog there anymore.
I've never trapped but I'd say it was the size of my hand.
