newbie skinner

Finally got my first catch this season,a nice hefty coon. Had a problem skeining it. I couldn't get the whole tail bone out, only half of it came out. Will that cause problems with preserving the tail I packed it with salt and left the tailbone in it still.

Re: newbie skinner

My opinion, you need to get the rest of it out.
You can try pulling on it with pliers. If you can't get to it, split the tail with a knife till you can. If that does'nt work just slit the tail the whole way down and pull out the bone. You may end up having a crooked split but the bone is out.
If you mess up the tail on your first few don't sweat it, they can be a pain to de-bone at times but you will get the hang of it. Best way to learn is to dive into it..

Whole tail, half tail on the pelt or no tail at all will pay the same but I would not make it a habit.
