Still new to trapping

Okay so i tried trapping coons last year and did not do well at all. I am trying again this year and really i have no idea what i am doing. I do know that there are alot of coons on the property i hunt and the stream that runs through it seems like a good place. I also have no idea what to do with the coon when i get it. Any help would be great

Re: Still new to trapping

Id start with your plan of what your going to do with it before ya set any traps. If your going to skin and flesh etc there are great vids on youtube if you dont have anyone to show you first hand. You could also look up fur buyers in PA and see if they buy in the round or green pelts.

As far as catching them, I'm no pro this is my first year but I feel I'm doing fair so far for a small time trap line. I like DPs for coon. Really doesn't get any easier. Only hard part with a DP is location. Anchor and set tr DP. Throw a marshmallow or 2 inside ( i have been doing one under the trigger and one on the trigger) stab it in the ground then X the trap with fish oil for a scent trail.

If you have water set the edges, look for tracks or any eye candy or spots that just look interesting to an animal. Look for deer trails and any water crossings like logs or large trees on the edges of the water. I can take pics tomorrow morning and show you my sets if your interested to see what you should be looking for.

Good luck!

Re: Still new to trapping

That would be great and thanks for the advice. I seen some of the videos on youtube. when you kill them do you shoot them or club them. Will a bullet hole decrease value.

a bullet hole will not decrease the value. I would be glad to show you how to skin.

I am only a few miles away.
