Tanning hides??

What does everyone do to tan there hides? How do you get them so soft like the ones you can buy? When i was younger i used a rub on tan, but as i recall it was always oily and stiff. any info would be greatly appriciated. thank you

Re: Tanning hides??

Send them to Moyles Mink and Tannery you won't be dissapointed. I've tried others localy and none compare to the quality.

Re: Tanning hides??

I try to go after coyote exclusively and tan my own. I used a kit from Van Dykes. My hides (fur on obviously) turn out GREAT. I think the key is to "break" and stretch the hide by hand. I use the edge of a plast table to pull the hide over. I did not tumble my hides last year but will this year while the wife is not looking. One problem I have had is getting the face to be as soft as the rest of the pelt. Practice makes perfect!!! Try it on your own -- it is a lot of fun!!!

BTW -- Sometimes the process is not obvious. Here is the sequence I used...
- Skin and board
- Dry the pelt as you normally would (alternating fur in then out)
- When ready, Pickle (I think 3 days)
- Stretch by hand/break
- Apply tan
- Break/stretch by hand
- Final dry
- Enjoy!!!
