Keeping pets away from traps?

I'm just getting into trapping, I was wondering how everyone keeps neighborhood dogs and cats from getting caught in there traps? I live near plenty of fire roads and pole lines but sometimes I'll be back there 3-4 miles and ill see people and there dogs. I know there's a leash law but I am guilty of runnin my lab without a leash. I just want to do the right thing. I have raccoon, fox and coyotes right at my chicken coop but I'm a little Leary of catchin "fido". Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I stay away from any potential pet areas. It stinks but it is better than making people hate trapping or not letting you trap their property anymore. As for my own property and family property everyone is ok with trapping and we all know about where they are set and when and we just keep pets away by keeping an eye on them rather than just letting them go out alone

Re: Keeping pets away from traps?

If you trap farm country there is no way you can keep from catching pets once in a while. They are just as inquisitive as any other animal you are trying to catch. If they smell a lure or bait that catches their interest they are going to check it out.If someone says they never catch pets on farms they don't trap much or are not telling the truth period. You have to use some common sence and not set close to buildings, hiking paths or areas you see people with pets but as was mentioned there are few places where you don't see people and pets at sometime.Another thing that is good to do is have a frank talk with the people you get permission from about pets.Tell them the straight of things and ask them how you are to take care of domestics you may catch. You may be surprized at the replies you get when you ask this question. Some say well I only trap in the woods and never catch pets, bull.Last week I caught a feral cat two miles from the nearest house.
