Marking sizes on wooden stretchers?

My son wants to put lines on his wooden fox and coon stretchers showing m, l, xl etc. Can someone guide me to a resource telling me how many inches from the tip to mark each of the various lines? Many Thanks.

My son and I:
Coon: Opossum:
Gray Fox:
Rat: Mink:
Red Fox: Skunk:

When marking the boards, mark them before you stain them. If you mark them afterwards, even with a permenant marker, the oil and grease from the animals makes the marker run.

MANY THANKS!! I had not planned on staining them. Is that necessary or just to make them look nice?
