Opening Day

In PA the season opens on Oct. 21. Thats a Sunday. I thought it always opened on Saturday? How many of you guys are out this early? Do you think the fur is anywhere near being prime?

Re: Opening Day

I'm just getting back into trapping. I took the last 20yrs off! Back in the late 70s, I thought the season started later. ?

Re: Opening Day

Starts too early, and muskrat/mink ends too early.

You'll get your rare big boar that is prime by say Oct. 25, but 80 percent will be real blue to black leather, and fox will not be furred out.

Re: Opening Day

Not me! I will start with a small line out between bow and gun season then I'll pull them the Sunday before Gun season starts and then start setting my main line the last Saturday of gun season on the properties that aren't big deer hunters or don't care. Oct. 21st is way, way, WAY to early for good primed goods. I can't see wasting a animal just because you have the itch or to get the jump on other guys trapping. It's not even worth skinning those blue critters.

Honesty is my only excuse.

Apples and oranges. Where I live the leaves are changed and weve already had a frost. We often have snow for Halloween. I'll be trapping the first week.

From what I hear weather isnt the deciding factor on fur primeness.

Re: Opening Day

What is the deciding factor then? Should they wait till Thanksgiving to trap in Canada too?

Re: Opening Day

I disagree. Having said that, I have trapped and handled and sold furs for over 40 years. I know when my furs are prime, or not. It doesn't matter to me when anyone else starts. To each his own.
