Re: How many beavers per dam

All depends, you could have everything from one bachelor to a pair, to a colony of 5-6 or even a double colony of twice that many.
Take them all, and more often move in next spring, assuming there are more on the waterway.

Re: How many beavers per dam

There no exact science to it. You could have one dam and two colony’s or you could or you could have three dams and one colony or you could have two dams and on bachelor. You’ll have a better idea in a few months by the size of the food cash and the amount of cutting in the area. Also look for bank dens as well. Beaver will use the same areas even if they are trapped out new beaver will move back in to an old area. They may move back next spring or 4 years later depending on the amount that are in that water way. I trapped out an area for the road department 6 years or so ago. It remained beaver free until last fall. When trapping season came in I took one bachelor out of there and that’s all that was there. But from the sing, I did not think there was more than one or two there.

Re: How many beavers per dam

how do you tell if its a beaver den there is some big dens across thr creek from the dam but i guess they could be big rat dens also im thinking its just a single beaver should i trap him or maybe wait a season for him to repopulate and more beavers move in

Re: How many beavers per dam

i learned many years ago to never try to guess the number in a lodge. have seen as few as one and as many as 8 and then when you think you have them all they prove you wrong.

Re: How many beavers per dam

I once trapped where they were multiple small dams all over the place, and sign out to wazoo. I thought it would be 2 matures, 2-4 2 yr olds and some 1 year olds with all that sign. Turns out it was all a single mated pair doing all that mess- 1 male, one female, weight was in the upper 30's. It was late season and the female had 4 kit fetuses in her. It is possible some other beavers had been there before and something happened to them and these 2 moved in.

Re: How many beavers per dam

I had read once about an older Canadian trapper who stated that he only would take two beavers out per lodge.

I follow this rule here in NY so I have beavers to come back and catch next year.
