anyone turtle trapping sunday?

I watched Newt's video and got the itch! I have a few floating turtle cages and salted bluegills for bait. Good way to start farm owner contact for fur trapping later.

Re: anyone turtle trapping sunday?

we have set jugs for 3 nights now. nothing but stripped bait. those pa legal turtle hooks are huge! i think they are picking the bait off the hook rather than swallowing it. even with zip ties on the bait. going to try whole bluegills and hide the hook inside rather than running the hook through.

Now your diggin' where the 'tators are!

bobcat - look around for a couple used hoop nets, or floating "quarles" traps. Check craiglist ect... The floaters are great. just prebait, pull up to pond or lake and give a toss. Tie off to bush or attach a rope with sash weigh, so wind wont blow it around. In the morning use a grapple with rope and toss it out to retrieve. This keeps theft down. Most guys will not wade out deep to jack a turtle trap. I use 15' rope and toss from road edge.

That's what I did last year and I never had a stripped hook. I used a bluegill that was just a little bigger than the hook...ran the hook through the mouth and poked it out the belly. Worked great

Re: anyone turtle trapping sunday?

Nice turtles, congrats. I place the meat on the hook, I then take a netting and push the hook through, then I tie the netting over the biat like an egg sack. If you are going to turn hooks this will help you from getting bait taken.

Good Luck to all.

Re: anyone turtle trapping sunday?

If you're selling them and/or in a low left area it's hard to beat traps.
