fish disapeared from pond

This is a man made small pond in front of the house, we have had it there for years without any issues of wild predators. Yesterday we all noticed that the goldfish were all but missing. There were probably about 30 in there, plus we have 5 big coy, and all we saw were 3 goldfish and the 5 coy. There is no sign of fish parts anywhere. Not sure a heron would fly down into here as it's a narrow spot to fly into.

Whatever took the fish went for the smaller fish over the big coy, so otter is likely out. No messes, so that counts out coons and possums. I'm left with: mink, bobcat, grey fox, kingfisher bird. Oh yeah whatever it was, if it was in daylight, would have had a domestic cat lounging nearby. I count the cats out since last time we had a cat that killed goldfish, it left messes around like half a fish on the sidewalk. It also killed frogs and left frog parts around.

Any ideas on the fish thief?

Yep, my guess is heron also. They are the # 1 predator of small pond fish (coon are # 2). And they don't leave a mess...they just grab them and swallow them whole.

Eh...wot?

Re: fish disapeared from pond

Had a great blue heron wipe out a pond full of dozens of crappie bass a few years ago. When he finished with them he moved to the lower pond and started eating my largemouth bass.

Eh...wot?

A friend of ours lost all her koi in her backyard pond to herons.

Heron. Ive seen them fly into pretty wooded yards and hit a pond no bigger than a kiddie pool.

I would have guessed heron, but now bobcat has me thinking. could very well be a water snake. Set up a trail cam, and you'll know for sure.

In a small levittown yard with a 6ft privacy fence a heron completely removed all the koi out of my bosses pond.

Smile its contagious. Its understood in all languages.

Re: fish disapeared from pond

Never had a problem with the herons, but I did have a coon that found his honey hole and my fantails last year. He got about eight of them.

I'm now down to one fantail and about half a dozen feeders...
