Place a a conibear trap over as many holes as you can find. You will need a big enough trap to cover the whole hole. I have never caught one on a foot hold always conibear's. They always have more then one hole so look around for the others. They wont be to far away from the main hole. Then just check them threw out a day a couple times. You will get him sooner or later.

I have caught them on foot holds didn't bury it either a local farmer I know says he dumps manure down the holes and they come out if you are in a safe area you might be able to shoot it then.

Used a cage trap, baited with tomatoes, to catch 6 from under my shed a few years ago.

They LOVE tomatoes.

Re: need help trapping groundhog

Please do not use the coni-bear. You can kill the neighbors dog with them. We are in danger of losing the ability to use them. The box trap works well on chucks.

Re: need help trapping groundhog

When you set your leg hold trap at the entrance to the hole under the shed, make sure it is off center to the run. A lot of people will set them dead center and the hogs body will set off the trap not a foot on the pan, resulting in a miss. Also stake the trap so the hog cannot get to or under the shed after it is caught. If the hog can get under the shed you will have a hard time getting him out after being caught and if it can get to the shed it will chew the heck out of it while in the trap. Don't bother burying the trap, just dig it in so it is flush with the ground and throw a couple of leaves over it for a little camo.
