muskrat hut in town

Maybe they are making a comeback?

Today I was getting gas in town, just a small town. There's a subdivision there on the edge that was built starting 4-5 years ago and they made 2 drainage ponds. One has springs in it and cattails and willows have been growing all through it for a couple years now. Today I am driving by and what do I see down in there? A muskrat hut! Of all the places! I dunno how they made it into there, nothing waterwise for them for a good ways around and lots of roads and traffic to get there. I'm going to have to go back and see if there's any other huts and take some pics.

When do we get to see the pictures?

I didn't make it to the gym today. That makes five years in a row.

Re: muskrat hut in town

Just hang on there nittany. I was there yesterday and it's just one hut, but seems pretty big. Gotta be some breeding going on. I hope so anyway. I'm probably the only person who has noticed this hut and knows what it is. People living by who have noticed it probably think beavers are in it LOL. And no I didn't don waders and go to the hut looking for runs and feed beds LOL.

Re: muskrat hut in town

i'm pretty excited about rats next year. i'm starting to see alot of rat sign while beaver trapping. we have a pond with a hut here or there but most of the time we don't bother with them because there are so few. but i'm starting to see them in the creeks again and popping up in ponds were they haven't been in years.

Now your diggin' where the 'tators are!

Re: muskrat hut in town

Had a local PA guy by here today picking up holster/mag pouch plus we did some target shooting. Before he left I told him about this hut and exactly where it is, but only after he noticed some of my traps laying around. He mentioned all the muskrats he used to trap every year( 300 or so) and how mink were once worth $80+, but you could hardly find many mink back then. I told him that to see this hut, esp where it is, should bring back memories for him, and he agreed. So I'm guessing there used to be rat huts all over the area at one time, probably every pond with a shallow area and cattails.
