Big Rank Coyotes......(pics)

How come those big stanky males are just so much fun to catch? I had one roll on a set yesterday about 20 yards up the field from this set and was left with nothing but a clump of guard hairs in my trap.
This morning I rounded the corner of the field and saw this fella bouncing around.

This shows the location a little. A farm road runs along the tree line, but there is a major bulldozed cutout in the bank so the animals circumvent that part of the road by running up into the field. It is also in a direct line of travel from two points of timber across a high spot in the fields, with a crop change coming together there too.

Getting ready for the next one

Caught him on some slightly tainted deer meat in Dobbin's Bait Solution and some Carmen's Pro's Choice...in a foxy looking dirthole (which is a rarity for me).

Nice yote. By the looks of the third pic I'd say he was in there good.

Re: Big Rank Coyotes......(pics)

It was a perfect pad catch, just above the meat of the pad with no movement at all.
I've been second guessing myself with 2# of pan tension as many big shot coyote trappers advocate 3 or more, but my last two were buried up just like they should be.
I think 2# is enough to have coyotes committed without fear of having too much for yearling foxes.

Mike, I'm like a little Ralphie that just opened his Red Ryder BB gun on Christmas morning when I see a coyote bouncing in a trap. The smile lasts for a couple days at least. I'm nowhere near where I want to be in the coyote game, but I'm putting together the puzzle piece by piece to where it's starting to look like something now.

The reason dedicated coyote trappers use extra pan tension isn't for catching coyotes but rather to avoid almost everything else. You'll catch a coyote fine on 2 lbs but you'll also catch oppossum, skunk, gray fox, rabbits, and even gray squirrels. If you move up to 3-4 you eliminate a lot of stuff. Depends on what you're after.
