Beaver Trapping?

I have never really trapped beaver but my son wants to give it a try. I mostly trap coons and fox. I have some foot hold traps...#2s and some 160s. Do you think that using a 160 for beaver will work or is that to small of a trap? Just wondering...thanks for the advice!

Re: Beaver Trapping?

A 160 for beaver is entirely too small if not illegal. Years back, when Pennsylvania's beaver season only kicked in in February much of the beaver trapping was done under ice. I knew several fellows that used their #2 fox traps under ice in drowning sets for beaver with good success. Today much of the beaver trapping is not done under ice and I consider using a #2 under these conditions risky at best even when setting for a front foot catch. If you can swing it pick up a couple of #3s and a pair of 330s and have some fun.

I trap mink because I don't know any better

Re: Beaver Trapping?

#2 will work fine if you know how to properly set a drowner.i have held them in smaller traps.if you can target the front foot and get them underwater you are good to go. as far as the 160"s just forget about them
