So I set up on my favorite farm Wednesday for cabling fox. While lookin around I found a large fresh coyote scat on a grass clump near a hole in a linefence. Perfect for blind/flat set. Chiseled in a new Duke #4 in front of it and rebar holed some Minn. Red in the clump, shot of red fox urine on his turd. Figured coyote would be fired up and have to work the set. Punched a dirt hole in 30ft. away also. Then I set out 6 cables on fox trails leading to the fields. While setting the trails I found a clump of coyote fur matted up from mange. Figured it would be my luck to hook up a mangey one. Well yesterday I came over the hill to see my set and had him, ugliest and nastiest one I've ever got. Big old guy could pass for a wolf. While rolling up to it I looked to my right to see not one but 2 reds bouncing around in my cables, all within 75yrds. I'm liking them big traps for big critters. Also note the cable on the one fox twisted up. I always wrap my cable around the support wire to stiffen it up and it never unwrapped, untwisted to see 7 seperate strands, glad it was a fox and not a coyote.
thats a mangy yote for sure! with his fur falling out like that, he'd have a tough time coping with the cold before long!
ive heard of frosty rumps on reds....yours are both frosty all over!
amazing the cable damage from it not falling off the support...i wrap my cable around the support stick and wire and wrap it so its all tight when its hung...the yote i cabled yesterday..cable was in fine shape..bent up some but not unwound or kinked..support stick was pulled out or broken off at the ground (i couldnt tell) and 11ga wire still on the stick..my CRs have a rubber tube support collar..
