Re: What to do with this catch?
They are pretty animals and look nice as a tanned hide hanging on the wall. Get 3 matching ones of average size and they make a nice hat.
If it's stinky, you can get alot of the smell out with the peroxide/baking soda/dishsoap mix, then if you send the dried pelts to Moyles to be tanned, they seem to get the stink totally out.
I was bummed that my last skunk had rubbed fur right down the middle of the back, plus it had sprayed a little. I took the head and front legs off of it. I needed some front legs for repairs, and the head has a good skull. My middle skunk was in perfect conditon but small, and I skinned it to be mountable. Skunk #1 had rubbed the fur off a good bit of the leg that was in the trap, so the spare left front leg of skunk 3 will repair it, making skunk 1 mountable. I have another skunk from another season in the freezer somewhere that needs a spare front leg.
Someone caught a HUGE skunk doing some nuisance work this season, and bought it to me for tanning. I skinned and prepped it to be mountable ( maybe- has the feet- but I'll send it to Moyles for garment tan so who knows what they do to the face). It was 12 or 13 pounds, a fat as anything male. It is likely big enough to make a hat with all by itself.
