weasel

I was sitting in my blind this morning when something ran about 15 feet in front of it. It was about 3 or 4 inches tall, had a body about 10 or 12 inches long with a bushy tail about as long as it's body. It was a dark brown color. Does that sound like it would have been a weasel?

Re: weasel

Could have been a long tail weasel but I think a mink since you say it was dark brown, could you see the color of its underside? A weasel has a light (cream) underside.

Re: weasel

No I couldn't see it's underside. A guy at work that traps said it sounded like a mink to him. He said a weasel would be white or have white spots this time of the year. Does that sound right?

Not always, Some weasles don't change color. If it was a chocolate brown color it was most likely a mink.

If you don't recall the light underside then I would say it didn't have one as they stand out pretty easily.

As far as changing color you commentted about the tail being long then "if" it were a weasel it would be a long tail (aka New York) weasel and most of them would not change color in the winter. A short tail, smaller species than the long tail, has a much higher chance of being white. I've never seen a brown short tail in winter.

Re: weasel

Tundra that wasn't what I saw. It was bigger than that.
