skinning fox ears

I have finally caught a few fox. What is the correct way to skin the ears? I cut them off at the base near the skull when skinning, but then should I go back and skin the ear off all the cartilage? Seems like that could be pretty easy to tear the ear, especially as you get to the tip. Is it ok to leave the cartilage in the ear and just put it on the stretching board. Also if anyone has any pics of a red fox fut up on a board I would like to make sure I am doing it right. Do I split the tail all the way to the tip like a coon?

Re: skinning fox ears

The current way to process the fox ears is to skin the cartliage out, This is fast and prevent tainting and aids drying time. You also want to split the tail the full length. I pin the tail open the first night while drying skin side out but no need to pin open when you flip the skin fur side out. To skin the ear cartlidge I slip a screw driver or punch between the skull and ear and pull down. There is good instructions and pictures of this in the Fur Harvesters Auction Pelt Handling Manual under fox. Look under Education on their website.

If you leave the cartliage in make sure and cut all the meat off the cartliage.

Yes cut the meat off the earbutt. You don't need to remove the cartilage or turn the ears. After turning the pelt to fur side out on your board or stretcher, put borax inside the ears, filling it. It helps to dry them faster.
