Rats in swamps

In streams with hard bottoms easy to walk and find runs and holes along with shallower water. Now I am in a swamp with tons of cattails and quite a few huts and feed beds. Water clear and about 2+ foot deep and silt another 1 to 2 foot deep also. Cant see any runs but can see the feed beds. Caught a few off them but I know there are lots of rats there. How to go about finding where to set when very difficult to walk and see after sinking and silt. Should I make a bunch of floats and just let them go? or what other choices does one have? Start sinking when foot touches bottom 99% of time.

Re: Rats in swamps

huts and feedbeds.footholds staked into deeper water, slice of apple or potato for bait.good thing they arn't too smart!
floats will work if you have overhead cover(ie in the cattails).they don't like it if its in the open, think hawks and owls.sometimes baited conis (potato or carrot last longer) will work.

Rats are to be easy to catch. Well when walking a hard bottom and 6 to 12 inches of water,Yes. In swamps it's an all new ballgame, Atleast for me. This place has rats it's just trying to find info on how to get it done. Like I said all silt and sinking. Oh I just started water trapping about 3 years ago myself. They say to start out on coons and rats. HA. Coons yes,are alot easier than rats IMHO Fox are for that matter for me.

Re: Rats in swamps

Give me a swamp and I'll load a boat with 'rats. 3-4 sets on every hut, trap on every feedbed, bodygripper in every run. Lot of work, yes... but reap the rewards. Can you get a canoe or boat on it? Makes things a lot easier.

Re: Rats in swamps

I have one that is too deep in muck and hard to boat-canoe access so I wait for freeze and clear ice hopefully to get on the ice and mark bubble trails near huts and feed beds. I stick a bamboo pole at each and will set right against pole when I have the time to load it up. Using long stands I can set a lot f 110's. I got what I could access so far and weather is not cooperating but hopefully before close.....later rats are fully prime too.
