homemade chain swivels

problem: forgot to order chain swivels with my order and wont have time to go to any trapping supply store as there are none that are very close to me(poconos) . does anyone know of anything strong enough to use instead of a swivel in the chain for my coon drags

Re: homemade chain swivels

some local hardwares around me have swivels......you could hook them in the chain with a lap link, or quick link

also you could make a swivel with a small piece of steel pipe, and some 20 penny nails............cut a piece of pipe about a 1/2" thick, drill a hole in 2 sides of the "sidewall", cut the nails off, and then crimp them around the chain like you would a J hook

Re: homemade chain swivels

Lots of homemade swivels patterns out there.
Do you have a B2 bender, welder? Do you have extra rivets? Simplest is to take pipe and drill a hole completely through the side wall of an 1/2" piece, bend and place a nail through each side and bend it shut.
If you want I could have commercial swivels to you in a couple of days. $4.50 a doz. + shipping, a small priority mail would run about $5.00.

Re: homemade chain swivels

i ended up bending some metal and using nails. then welded the nails shut around the chain for extra security. just came in from the shed now and they work fine. thanks guys. new little mig welder is great for small applications like my trapping stuff

Re: homemade chain swivels

hows it going now ?

i did not come up with this idea, wish i had, it pretty slick if ya ask me. anyhow ya take a single link of #2 chain (you can stack two single links for more strength)run a j hook through one side flip over run a j hook through from the opposite direction. wish i could find a pic. you can use other sizes of chain link just make sure the head of the j hook wont go through the link(S)
