Trapping an old strip mine. There are areas with thousands of yote tracks but it is desolate. No vegetation, just dark grey/black dried mud. What can I use here? I'm assuming a drag is a must unless the cable stakes I have can hold tight. I was thinking a hay set because it sure would add the visual appeal, but I read they are often too cautious for this set.
Old strip minds are great areas, there has to be some type of funnel point to the area some key point that brings them in and out of the area. If you are going to trap the open area that is rock solid advise above. You can also bring something into the area to add eye appeal or to make a post set. If there’s nothing for drag to hang up on I would use one. Make longer anchors and or double them up, or make longer stakes and double them up depending on the soil condition.
A couple railroad tie plates cabled to the trap will work too. Make sure they are about 30 pounds total.
They might move them, but not far, and you should be able to track it very easily. (I'm anti-hammer when I can be)
get down on your knees and look at it from the coyotes hight,is it still barren? or you can import a rock, wood, clump of grass, mound of dirt, cornstalk, ect to make the eye appeal.
as for staking,i'd try the soil to see how it is.
