im new to trapping my second year, and with the colder temps in the north east last week at night and staying some what cool do you guys think the coons will start to be going into prime or too early yet.
ive always used the Thanksgiving as my rule of thumb....anything before then has a real good chance of being blue...our coon fur season in PA is relatively short lived depending on the winter....but your looking at a few weeks or so typically before cold and snow set in and the coon start denning up and getting stained and rubbed..
i've been lucky the last few years. the coons i got while canine trapping were mostly big boars so even from the beginning of season they were not blue. this year however the boy and i will be targeting coon and expect we will run into some blue ones. because of our schedules and other seasons most of our trapping will have to be done before thanksgiving so it is what it is i guess.
On a side not I ran up to Pulaski to do some salmon fishing yesterday. Without exaggerating I had to see at least 30+ dead coons alongside the road. Only saw one roadkilled deer and one red fox the whole way as well.
