Do wild Mink have white chins...

...or white patch on their throat or white blaze on their chest...is a question I get from time to time.
The answer is it varies greatly. Some have no white, some just a white chin, Some have all three, white chin, throat & chest spot.

Here's Nittany Lion's catch today. I took this picture to show the variation of the white chin/white patch(es)...

I havenít caught a boat load of mink, but I think the ones I did catch had only white chins. Iíve seen where the the white coloration on the underside of fishers varies quite a bit also.

Yes they can, there are variations.

When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!

It's been a long time since I was trapping and when I did it wasn't in PA but in western NYS. My brother and I caught mink on a regular basis for years and right now I don't remember them having white chins and throats like those in that photo.

I have to correct myself on this statement. In 1960 I had a mink stole made for my mother for her birthday from the hides of 18 mink that I had caught. In the finished product the top row of pelts retained the heads. My mother is long gone but I just phoned my sister in NYS who still has this thing all these years later. I asked her if those pelts had white chins and she said they do. So much for my memory from 58 years ago.
