It all started with a skunk.

I put this set in last Saturday. It started out as a dirt hole. Got a skunk on the first check. We don't have many around here, thankfully, I don't think I've ever caught more tha a dozen I my life. He stunk it up to high heaven, and I rebedded the trap as a flat set. The next morning it had a big coon. I reset it as as compass set, and the next morning it had a possum. Reset it again as a compass set and yesterday it had a female fisher. Let it go, and reset it as a hay set. The ground was awfully tore up from the previous four catches, so I piled up some dry grass clippings over some tainted beaver meat. Today it had a big male red...one who had been causing problems as a digger. I think his nose got overwhelmed with all the scent that was hanging around this set. I remade the set again as a hay set, we'll see what tomorrow brings.

That is a nice red.

When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!

You are well on your way of catching every possible PA furbearer at one location in one season!

Got snowed out last night....predators took the day off.

In the past, I used to be a stickler about having a clean trap for remakes. Iíve backed off this the last couple years....I try not to have any blood split at the set and I rub down the jaws with wet dirt. I think predators are curious about a catch circle and the related smells. Sometimes, as in this case, the area gets really shredded beyond what I can fix with a whisk. Thatís when the hay set comes out....I can blend everything back together with a pile of dried grass clipping. I got a grey a couple days ago on a dirt hole switched to a hay set after it got trashed by a coon.

Could you post a photo of your hay set remake?

Yea, one of the biggest white tips Iíve seen. Iím not much of a photographer. Lol.

I tripped that trap in the hay set today....Iíll be resetting it after deer season. Hay sets are great when the weather turns nasty...to donít have a dirt hole filling with water, and although I still dig/pound out a trap bed, you can blend the grass or hay from the mound to cover the trap. I think it has good eye appeal too. In some pressured areas, canines get dirt hole shy after busting a set or two.

Iíll try to post a pic when I make another one.

sounds like with the amount of critters you caught there, you should maybe throw in a second or third set.
