Anyone else send out fur to be tanned?

Anyone send their pelts to a commercial tannery this year? I have a big load into Moyles this season. My buddy sent a fisher in at the end of January to Moyles.....got it back last week. A two month turn around time is really good. Last year I waited till mid July for my tanned hides to ship from Moyles. Folks must be getting their fill of wallhangars.

I used to send quite a few pelts to Moyles back in the 90's and early 2000's when fur prices were a bit depressed. I had a bunch of nice wall hanging fur such as mink, raccoon and fox then discovered ebay and saw what people were paying for tanned fur. I thought about sending my mink there this year but decided to roll that dice with NAFA this year.

The horizon is your starting point.

I also shipped to Z&L this year....I havenít used them in 30 years. Their work was very good years ago, they just kinda fell off my radar screen. They advertise a 60-120 day turn around time. Much cheaper to ship there than to Idaho.

It was about $22 USPS ground... going to Idaho, and they hit me for $25 for the return cost. I thought that was very fair. Nice to see someone not use the return shipping as a avenue to increase profits.

Priority would have been about double. Ground was about 4 to 5 days longer in transit.

I use USPS flat rate boxes and envelopes frequently when shipping honey/ beeswax to folks. I can get six 12 oz honey bottles in a padded envelope and ship for $7.25. You can ship whatever you can cram into a flat rate box- as long as itís under 70 lbs.The post office has a box called a Game Board Box ( think Monopoly box size ) that ships for $18. Iíve jammed a bunch of hides in a box. Flat rate also includes some insurance coverage. ($100). You can go to USPS website and order any size box, theyíre free and your mailman will deliver them to your door.

In a large box of hides, I start wrapping larger pelts- likes coyote, around the perimeter of the box, then fox, coon, etc and work my way to the center tithe smaller hides. Round beaver go on top or bottom of the box. I doesnít hurt to fold hides either. I always print two copies of my invoice- tape one on the inside flap of box, leave other in zip lock bag on top of hides.

When shipping hides to tanneries, you also can skip the flip on hides normally put up fur out....coyote, fox, cats, fisher. Many tanneries request that all hides arrive fur in, but theyíll still tan them either way.

WOW!! Just received "out for delivery" email for package from Idaho. I don't recall the exact day I shipped but it is easily a 2 month turnaround.

I couldn't be more pleased with the job they did on the hides delivered yesterday. 100% of all I could hope for.
