Re: CR season start date

it was moved this year from jan 1st to dec. 26th. i think it will stay close to this date so no major conflicts with seasons that dogs are used and not to conflict with rifle season?? just my 2cents

Re: CR season start date

If you think about it there is still a very good chance of catching domestic hunting dogs. Rabbit season is in until mid february. There is always a chance of catching dogs during the entire trapping season. I think that the PGC is still trying to get a feel for this entire cable restraint system and how it will work in PA.

Re: CR season start date

They ain't as worried about our beagles as they are the high priced bird dogs. LOL. Can someone show a picture of how you release the snare? I used to trap but never with snares. Might be good to know how to do it in case one of my dogs get caught.

Re: CR season start date

It works like a choke chain leash. The animal learns to relax on the "leash." You simply open the loop around it's head. Or cut it off with cable cutters, not linesmen pliers.

Thanks, I didn't know if there was a catch or anything to keep the loop from opening back up. I wouldn't want to cut someones snare though unless I had to.

Re: CR season start date

Cable restraints are at most $3 apiece, and are very, very rarely re-usable after a catch. I don't think anyone's going to mind if you cut one. However, they are basically a leash. The lock which slides down the cable is designed to not come back up, but if you look at the lock you can slide it backwards. You just have to tilt it a little bit and work it backwards. Maybe I'll do a pictorial on how to remove one. Put it on the Small Game and Hunting Dog forums.

Re: CR season start date

Cable restraints when used and set properly are no more dangerous to dogs than a lehold trap...they may get caught in it...but chances are real high that CRs set properly. Won't harm the dog...

Like was said, release is as simple as opening the loop..no lock on it...hardest part would be calming the dog...cable cutters will work great...just cut the inside of the lock not outside it....if someone cuts a dog from mine, great..they aren't reusable anyways...leave me my components though...and don't take my fur...or I will be calling the pgc...
