Does anyone know where your traps are set?

I was thinking tonight, that no one knows where I have my traps set. I'm not sure I could provide enough directions to have someone pull them if I got injured or otherwise unable to continue to run the line, ie knee injury, back injury etc.

What do you guys do to cover the outside chance of being unable to finish? A map? Having a helper on the line that knows the spots?

This situation has happened twice over the past 40+ seasons on my lines. Each time I was able to map out the line and send top notch outdoorsmen to run or pull the line. It helps to have a good network when rough times find us.

My great uncle was a well known and accomplished fox trapper in northern Centre County. In the early 70's he had a heart attack while checking his traps and died. My recollection was that he had about 4 dozen sets out. A few traps were recovered, many were discovered years later. I'm sure some have never been found.

I always trap with a buddy & we both know where all the sets are. Our kids get involved thru the season and know the locations as well.

Re: Does anyone know where your traps are set?

This exact question was one of the workgroup questions that we got during my daughter's CR class two years ago. They gave us the question because technically it is illegal by the letter of the law to have anyone check or pull them for you. They told us that most any officer would like a phone call to let them know so there is no problem. This year I barely have any set, but in years past, there was usually someone with me at any given point while checking, and I would say that at least most would have been able to be found.

X2 and they are sworn to secrecy! My one daughter led the way the other night when we were checking in the dark. She said dad I could check these by myself. I was pretty impressed since all she had was a headlamp and we were pretty far off any trails.

Re: Does anyone know where your traps are set?

The two farms I set this year both landowners know where my traps are. I would take the one landowners 15 year old son with me checking them every day because he was interested in trapping. We pulled all traps on that farm today.
