putting up your own fur!

To you guys that skin and flesh all your catches every year kudos to you! I decided to do all my own this year, and if I had to do a bunch every night I wouldn't get to bed, but I am getting quicker especially with coons, only got to do 1 fox so far this year

Re: putting up your own fur!

There are a bunch of instructional YouTube videos about skinning, fleshing and boarding. The Coon Creek series gives good step by step directions, they do various critters. Forty years ago, I learned my fur handling skills by destroying pelts, then try to not repeat my last mistake. Good year to practice you skinning and fleshing skills... A lot better to gouge a hole in a five dollar coon than a thirty dollar pelt.

Not going to lie my 1st attempt or 2 was pretty bad, but the guy I buy my supplies from/raw fur dealer is top notch and will take the time to answer questions and show me tricks!

Re: putting up your own fur!

Hardly anything to do with a red fox , coons just roll up fur out and keep cool a day . Fleshing made easy ... Get a big beaver and then you'll be having fun , skinning and fleshing

Re: putting up your own fur!

Beaver are my least favorite, by far. I can skin a Fox and a coon in just a couple of minutes. Fleshing reds is almost nothing, some Grey's can be fattened up good, but no big deal. I have coon knocked down to just a couple of minutes. Beaver....... I just can't find a way to make myself any faster. I have watched those guys on YouTube that are amazing at it. Have tried their ways to no avail. I love trapping them, but they are easily my least favorite animal to skin, flesh and especially stretch.

Living the life one day at a time.

Re: putting up your own fur!

my first critters was done with a big spoon to flesh with, no board! took about 3 days and was a mess when we got done! flash forward 40 years, now with all the right tools, everything but beaver is pretty easy.and beaver are better now than then! got a mb fleshing knife and beaver are easy again!

Re: putting up your own fur!

My old fur handler has returned. Now I can trap the way I really like to and still spend time in the shop or with my Angel.

Used to like to put up fur but, I'm over it. All part of trapline management for me. Catching fur gets easier, put up stays the same once mastered.

The difference between dreamers and achievers is action.
One try is worth a thousand guesses.

Re: putting up your own fur!

Now do you guys sell all your fur? I'm going to keep it this year and just get everything tanned
