First fur of the season

So, I got a late start this year due to shoulder surgery on 11/13. I finally felt strong enough to give it a go. On Saturday, I only had time to hang a few cables and I put out a total of 3 traps, 2 on the edge of a corn field right off of the woods and 1 as a "cat" set further up across the pasture. After dealing with the rain and washed out dirt holes, I freshened the corn field sets yesterday.

I headed out for my check this morning and realized that I had forgotten my phone, of course.

Walked up through the woods and looked out towards the corner where my sets are. In the breaking light, I thought I saw a strange clump of corn stalks. Shined my light and saw eyes. I was thinking fox. As I walked the 100 yds along the edge the movement was unusual. As I neared closer, I could tell it wasn't a fox as I thought, but a young female coyote caught by both paws. What a muddy mess. And of course no phone so no camera.

After a generous washing with the hose at the house.

And she was full of ticks. 9 on this ear alone.

Re: First fur of the season

Congrats...ticks are awful on this side of the river as well...I caught reds in November that were so scratched up from them itching that they looked worse than February fox. Some had ticks so thick that they were competing for space on the fox between the shoulder blades..Looked like raisins visible through what was left of fur dead center on their backs...horrible

Re: First fur of the season

Sad thing is that I couldn't yet reset it. The trap was so clogged with mud. I'm going to punch a fresh one in it tomorrow and add some others and hang some more cables

Sad to see so many ticks on that yote.
I caught a small female mink with a bunch of ticks.

The horizon is your starting point.

Re: First fur of the season

What is the best way to deal with the ticks after skinning?
