Mink basics

I'd be interested in hearing about some basic setups for catching mink. I have a small stream in my trapping area that is holding some mink but I was unable to connect last season. Thanks.

Re: Mink basics

I like trail sets with a 110. If the creek is small usually you can see their little worn trails going over, under, or around something creekside. Fast, doesn't need to be pretty, no lure or bait, just drop it in and wire it to something, keep it within the stream banks for legality.

Re: Mink basics

it's a real small stream. I tried a few trail sets and a few sets along bank undercuts last year. First time I ever went after em so I was winging it.

Re: Mink basics

If the stream is very small. Like, just a little trickle it can be narrowed down and block it with a 110. Some of my best spots are little seeps that I guard with a 110.

Re: Mink basics

how bout lures and baits. I see tundagriz recommends nothing on the trail sets, which makes sense. How bout pocket set lure bait.

You made the basic setups.
Did you set the first day of Mink season? How many days did you trap that crick? Did you set both sides of the crick?

I don't recall if it was first day or not. I did set both sides of creek and it was for a good length of time.

Re: Mink basics

Buzzzzz, Sounds like you are doing right, but may be missing a small detail or two or Maybe not. Hard to tell from here.
Do you have any Mink Trapping books? Maybe re-read books. Go down to crick before the season and pre-make set locations and get Mink using your locations. Use your woodsmenship and try to see what's happening.

Re: Mink basics

Set bridge walls if possible. No boat or lure is needed. Almost all my mink are caught at blind sets.
