Rainy Day Red Fox

Got several inches of rain last night. rained all night. went out this morning and had a red in my trap. looked like a drowned rat! anyhow, i brought him into the garage and hung him near the wood stove to dry. skinned him out a few hours later and lost half the nice white tip on his tail and had some more trouble with the ears.... I skinned 2 last week with no problem at all. I'm very new at this tho. Is this just something that happens when they get soaked? Should i have skinned him before i dried him? Another question for my curiosity: About how long does it take you veterans to skin a fox? I'm gettin it done in about an houf and a half or so but i'm really takin my time and playin with the ears and such.... Which brings up another question: How far should i be going with the ears? Flipping them inside out or just cutting them off at the base. I plan on tanning my hides at home with a rittel's tanning kit.. Thanks for any tips/input guys. I'm learnin as i go here and teachin myself 99% of it...

Re: Rainy Day Red Fox

Keep them away from the heat....use a fan to dry them or as a friend told me he uses a leaf blower to dry his wet furs before skinning them

When I get a wet coon I'll rub news paper on it tell it's mostly dry. News paper is super absorbant. Works great.
I never skined a fox till this year and it's taking me 45mins-1 hour.
I cut the ears off as close to the head as possible. I don't turn them inside out.

my advice is buy Hal Sullivans fur handling 2000 DVD. Or any other fur handling DVD's or Books to help teaching yourself.

Nimrod -- a hunter; or a person regarded as silly or foolish.
Which one are you?

Re: Rainy Day Red Fox

I agree with flyguy I keep my wet fur away from the heat and just hang to dry. I do towel dry to get the heavy water off then just hang them up and brush the fur toward the floor. As far as time goes you will get faster with time the more you do the faster you will get. I can do a red in about 8 to 10 minutes. I cut the ears off at the base.

Re: Rainy Day Red Fox

thanks alot guys. leafblower sounds like a good idea. 8-10 minutes to skin a fox! can't wait til i have it down to that! cuttin the ears off at the base saves alot of time for sure. has anyone tanned their own fox with a kit like rittels and just left the cartilage in the ear?
